When you have anxiety, it can make life feel pretty frightening. There are several things you can do to improve the way you handle stressful and anxiety producing situations. By making some lifestyle changes you can get a handle on your anxiety and feel better about your life.

Technique #1 – Exercise

Exercise is one of the best ways to help you reduce anxiety levels. This is especially true if you have a lot of physical symptoms related to feeling nervous or anxious. The easiest and best exercise for anxiety reduction is walking.

Walking every day can help you to improve your brain chemistry, relieve stress from muscles, and give you a chance to breathe fresh air. Don’t worry about how far or fast you walk, just make the goal to get out and do it every day.

Technique #2 – Practice Gratitude

When you have anxiety, you may have a tendency to focus on the negative aspects of life. By changing your perspective you can improve the way you feel. Make it a point to write down at least three things each day for which you’re grateful.

They don’t have to be big things – even something as small as having someone smile at you in the grocery store can be worth writing down. By doing this you’ll be more likely to see the good in your life rather than focusing on fears.

Technique #3 – Create a Peaceful Home Environment

There are a lot of things we bring into our home that can actually cause anxiety to increase. For example, spending all of your time watching the news on television can create anxiety about what’s going on in the world.

Violent movies, video games, and even some music can cause your heart rate to increase and add to your anxiety levels. Creating a home with peaceful music and uplifting media can help reduce your anxiety.

Technique #4 – Talk to a Friend

Often people experiencing anxiety become more isolated. Talking about your feelings helps to sort out what’s going on. Take time to visit with friends, call someone if you’re feeling worried, or even to join a message board or chat room.

Technique #5 – Stay Busy

Slow or down time becomes a breeding ground for worry. Find things to do that will help you stay busy such as reading, housework, gardening, spending time with friends, going for a walk, or anything else you enjoy.

The less time you have to sit around and worry, the less anxiety you’ll feel. However, if you feel that your anxiety is out of your control and affecting your life greatly it’s a good idea to seek professional help to see what other steps you can take.
